The Hudson River Valley is “the best kept secret” in N.Y. state. It is a true destination. Sugar Shack Farm, East Columbia County, N.Y. is located near Hudson, N.Y., close to Rhinebeck N.Y., and not far from Great Barrington, MA (voted best small-town in the US in 2012).
The area, located just 2 hours from New York City (by Amtrak to Hudson Station) or car is an abundance of culture, great restaurants, outdoor activities, beauty and solitude. It is a complete 4 season retreat offering swimming, golf, cycling, hiking, tennis, horseback riding, kayaking, skiing, boating, fishing, hunting and farmers’ markets.
Hudson offers fantastic restaurants such as Fish and Game, Crimson Sparrow, American BarBQ, Vietnamese, Sushi, Chinese, Mexican, Italian and Middle Eastern restaurants. The town also boasts several movie theatres along with live music and performances at the Hudson opera House, Basilica, Club Helsinki, the Spotted Dog Beer and Ale House. Finally, you can spend the day visiting the many antique shops, art galleries, clothing stores and coffee shops that dot Warren Street.
Rhinebeck is a charming town replete with boutiques and wonderful restaurants and bars such as Le Petit Bistro, Local, Market Street, Gigi, Cinnamon, Del Posto, Puccini. You can continue your day with a yoga or pilates class or a massage at Haven Spa. Or take a walk along Poet’s Path to the Hudson River. End the day at Upstate Films to take in the rotating selection of acclaimed independent films.
Great Barrington offers terrific local boutiques and restaurants such as Prairie Whale, Baba Louie’s, Allium, Café Adam and Castle Street Café. The town also features a great hike up Monument Mountain, a walk along the Housatonic River and arts at the Mahawie Performing Arts Center and Triplex Cinema. Round it off with the popular farmer’s market (seasonal) and it is easy to see how Great Barrington was voted best small town in the US!
The towns are wonderful but the true magic of the area lies outdoors. Columbia County has hundreds of acres of protected land with miles upon miles of walking and hiking trails for all abilities. Some highlights are:
Copake Falls has a variety of moderate to challenging hikes that offer magnificent views overlooking the Hudson River Valley, the Berkshires and Vermont. The town also has access to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail which provides mostly paved biking and running paths from Hillsdale to Millerton. At the entrance point on the rail trail is a bike shop where you can rent bikes for the day, week or month.
Bash Bish Falls ( trail access is from Copake Falls) offers a more leisurely walk along forested trails to the highest waterfall in Massachusetts.
Taghkanic State Park is nearby, where you can beach, swim, windsurf, kayak and walk the trails. A perfect place to picnic with your family and friends!
Additional summer attraction is the Bard College Fisher Performing Arts Center in Tivoli. It is also renowned for hosting Spiegeltent, a world famous performing arts cabaret.
